Out with the old, in with the new

Two pictures taken today one block apart. A house being demolished in the 800 block of Gregory and the new Lofts on Lee development going up (as seen from Union St.)

Bicycle cop in Glenwood?

I just saw a Greensboro bicycle cop riding his bike down Highland Ave. I wonder if GPD is increasing the use of bikes in neighborhoods to localize patrol and cut down on use of patrol vehicles. Either way, it would be refreshing to see this type of patrol in Glenwood on a regular basis. Of course there was also an unmarked police car that stopped right in front of me today on Highland while I was in my back yard wielding a hand saw and removing shrubbery from the side slope of my yard. I thought he was going to get out, but perhaps he just wanted to sit in the shade.

Shots Ring Out?

Around 11:15 last night I heard the first of three gun shots over about 5 minutes and one speeding car. I was in that state where I was just beginning to fall asleep and I couldn't muster the energy to get up and grab my cell phone to call them in to the police. I only hope the speeding car was a police car that was responding to someone else who didn't lack the energy to call in the shots. This is only the second time I've heard gunshots since moving into the neighborhood in September of last year. It's unsettling to say the least and not something I want to get used to hearing.

Prostitution in Glenwood?

Over the last few months my wife and I have noticed to constant characters roaming Haywood, Highland, Gregory and Silver primarily. These two ladies appear to be out for strolls looking for rides in exchange for cash. In two cases, we have seen one of them (pic above) get picked up and dropped off - once in a business vehicle for a window repair company! Now I've seen the Dateline shows where the guy follows pimps and prostitutes around his neighborhood and videotapes them for the police and I don't think I'm ready to do that, but this appears to be prostitution and it is not appropriate for Glenwood or any neighborhood. I watched her walk down Haywood deposit an overly large blue bag at a yellow house at the corner of Silver and Haywood and then resume to walk back on Haywood up Gregory and then down Union. I did call the police during this time and I did point her out to the police when he came by but I'm not sure they can do anything except take note of her appearance in case they catch her in the future. The bottom line is I'm going to call the police whenever I see these two ladies in an effort to let them know that this sort of activity is not welcome even if they do live in the neighborhood. When I mentioned to the lady before that we do not want prostitution in this neighborhood, she responded "That's fine. I don't care. I live in the neighborhood."

Leave No Stone Unturned

I've watched in amazement as the family at this house on Gregory St. literally transforms every square inch of their yard into an urban farm. I'm not sure whether everything they harvest is for their own personal use or if they sell it or trade it, but I can't wait to see what begins coming up. This photo was taken a few weeks ago just after I saw a lady in the front yard crouching down apparently planting seeds.
